First of all, please tell us a little about your careers in your respective fields.
Will < W >
I'm a freelance illustrator/artist doing everything from large scale murals to illustration and graphic design.
Ione < I >
I run a coffee shop in Worthing (near Brighton) called Black Crow Coffee as well as my own home bakery called Twit Twoo Bakery.
What type of things are you up to at the moment in your work?
< W > I’m currently trying to move away from commission work and focus more on creating my own art/images. I'm generally always busy which is nice. If I’m ever not completing a commission then I’m working on my own art.
< I > I’m currently preparing for the summer, which involves lots of food festivals across Sussex. I’ll be selling coffee and homemade cake!

Will, in your work you use a bit of dark humour with your skeleton characters and have fine detail in your drawings, could you tell us a little bit about the concepts of your work and about your pieces.
< W > I think a bit of humour is instantly engaging and often the dark element just happens without me realising. 'The Book Of Bare Bones' began life after I made the first drawing and it was really popular, I'm on my 3rd book now, its a lot of work to maintain as a series but also a lot of fun, and commercially quite successful.
You often draw Japanese characters in your artwork, what do you think about Japanese culture?
< W > I'm a big fan, it's a place I'd love to visit one day. The history, culture and art are all incredibly inspiring. I'd love to paint some walls in Japan!

With your graffiti work we saw one of your murals, what other work have you done?
< W > Many murals around Brighton and some in London. I’ve drawn on everything from Vans shoes to bike frames to music packaging.

You took us to a very unique spray paint shop in Brighton, could you tell us a little about the shop?
< W > They're a smokers shop in the Lanes that has a large basement of spray paint, the guys that run it are really knowledgeable and funny, and I always have a good chat with them and get the gossip.

What’s the art scene in Brighton like?
< W > Yeah really good, there's a ton of great artists and as a city it homes some incredible work, both on walls and in galleries.

In your independent work is there anything you are particular about or have strong preferences for?
< W > I find when I'm creating something for myself I try and convey an emotion and then also a contrast of empty space and fine detail.
I have a new body of work entitled 'the people', which is all to do with the rich tapestry of surviving on earth and the relationship with our surroundings.
Do you have any moments of realisation, inspiration etc. when you create? If so what kind of moments are these?
< W > I generally lie in bed for an hour or so before I can sleep and thats usually the time I think of things.
I keep a notepad by the bed to jot ideas down, sometimes I wake up to pages of absolute nonsense.

What kind of people do you want to see your work?
< W > I'm not sure really, I'd like to think it would appeal or at least make sense to everyone but I appreciate that may not be the case.
I often show things to Ione and judge her reaction as to whether I show other people or not haha.

What’s special about Brighton?
< W > The food, so many great places to eat.
< I > I second that! That and the fact there is so much to do all the time. There are art and food festivals on almost constantly.

You have a lovely house with a studio in the attic, could you tell us a bit about your lifestyle where you live now.
< W&I > It’s much quieter, we’re a few miles out of Brighton now. It’s nice to be close enough to visit but great to return to a quiet home!

Are there any artists, designers, music or culture that have particularly influenced you?
< W&I > I grew up obsessed by people like Durer, Dore and Escher, then later discovered more contemporary work like Keith Haring and it really hit home how a great idea can be conveyed in a simpler way.
I'd like to think I'm moving to a point where those influences gel together in my imagery.

What are your goals in the future for your work?
< W > I just want to make work constantly, doesn't matter where or on what.
Short term I'd like some more large scale walls to paint, and go bigger and weirder! Maybe when I visit Japan? :)
< I > I’d really like my own brownie shop one day! Maybe in Japan also?
Will < W >
Ione < I >
